A Tribute...

This small page is here to give mad props out to The Sci-Onion, the online comedy magazine that recently was transformed into The Harvard Satyrical Press (HSP) at the request of former President Jimmy Carter, who was accidentally given the Nobel Peace Prize in Chemistry. The Sci-Onion began as a comedy magazine named in a remarkable fit of creative inspiration, with the manifesto, as the logo says, of offering "poor attempts at humor from scientists and other nerds...in the spirit of The Onion". It's satire format was meant to be a tribute to The Onion, but as time went on, it became clear that it would be better to attempt to steal legitimacy from the university rather than from a preexisting, highly sucesful, online comedy magazine. Hence the switch. It also seemed reasonable to officially branch out beyond science topics, even though The Sci-Onion sort of always did. As it happened, with a little paperwork, a bacon cheeseburger, and the help of a few well meaning giraffes, The Harvard Satyrical Press was born. We fooled the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) into thinking we were a community outreach group who would promote earthquake safety in the greater Boston area, and we also got a couple hundred bucks of startup funding from the Graduate Student Council (GSC)...but what we had to do to get that is another story all together.

For those of you who have been reading Sci-Onion articles while the whole thing was still unofficial, on the down low and all that, the first 4 issues of The Sci-Onion are now archived online, masquerading as the first 4 issues of HSP, dating back to January 2003. This gives HSP the appearance of having some measure of preexisting longevity, even though it is actually just getting started right now. It's kind of like starting a light bulb business today and making your sign say, "Sunspot Lightbulbs: Brightening Homes Since 1983". A harmless white lie, if there ever was one. In any case, now we're official, and we don't plan to get any funnier, so you might as well check out the old articles.

In any case, by popular demand, we have the old Sci-Onion logo above, and a few related image banners and whatnot from the previous site below. You can try clicking on shit from the logo and see what happens. It's really clever. You'll probably find yourself saying, "How about that?" Go knock yourself out. Other than that, I just wanted to give a shout out to my homie Biggie. You ain't dead. You and Tupac are probably sipping margaritas in Cancun laughing about how you faked your own deaths and fooled the whole world in order to slip out of public life. But that's just my opinion. In any case, enjoy the old humor and the new comedy to come.

Andy Friedman, Harvard Satyrical Press Editor in Chief, October 2003
